Our Projects
Medicine Mondiale develops and distributes medicines and medical technology through a network of global social entrepreneurs and partners. We assist local partners in the establishment of sustainable healthcare initiatives which make quality healthcare outcomes accessible to the poorest of the poor.
Cataract Surgery
The Problem | |
In 1992 the average cost for an Intraocular Lens required for modern cataract surgery was US$300.
|
|
The Solution
Between 1993 and 1997 Ray Avery CEO and
Founder of Medicine Mondiale designed and commissioned two state of the
art Intraocular lens (IOL) laboratories one in Eritrea and one in
Nepal.
Today these laboratories supply 10% of
the world market for IOL's and together with the efforts of other
generic lens manufacturers have seen the price of lenses decrease to
less than $6.00 making modern cataract surgery available to the poorest
of the poor.

Infant Nutrition
The Problem | |
Acute diarrhoea is the leading cause of death in infants under two years of age while protein energy malnutrition accounts for over half of all child deaths in developing countries. Diarrhoeal infections and
malnutrition disrupt the patient’s ability to digest and absorb
protein. Breaking down large proteins and carbohydrates requires energy and patients may die of protein malnutrition or organ failure even with a full stomach of food because they lack the necessary enzymes for digestion. |
|
The Solution
Medicine Mondiale is developing an improved range of nutritional products for the treatment of dehydration and protein energy malnutrition which may be used in combination to combat acute diarrhoea and protein energy malnutrition on a global scale. These novel products are based upon pre-digested protein formulations which provide an instant source of energy through the rapid absorption of amino acids.
Pilot scale production validation is underway and commercial production will commence in 2008.
Acuset Improved IV Flow Controller
The Problem | |
The traditional "roller clamp" used to administer Intravenous fluids and medicines is not intuitive to use and due to it's highly sensitive adjustment mechanism, medical staff have difficulty in maintaining accurate infusion rates. In the developing world, particularly in crisis situations, patients are often left to treat themselves. The under administration of medicines such as antibiotics results in increased rates of patient morbidity while over administration of potent hypnotic and chemotherapy drugs may result in death. |
|
The Solution
The Medicine Mondiale Acuset TM flow controller is intuitive to use even by relatively untrained operators.
The Acuset's Patented dial-a -flow mechanism allows flow rates to be set with a high degree of accuracy and precision improving patient safety and making every dollar spent on healthcare stretch further.
The Medicine Mondiale Acuset Intravenous Flow controller has the potential to save millions of lives and improve the quality of clinical care in almost every clinical discipline throughout the developing world.
Infant Incubator
The Problem | |
Worldwide every year five million infants die as a result of low birth weight and infection. The majority of these deaths could be prevented if infants had access to high tech life saving incubators. Sadly these, first world incubators cost over $15,000 and cannot be serviced and maintained locally. |
|
The Solution
Working in technical collaboration with Design that Matters USA Medicine Mondiale has developed a high tech, low cost infant incubator. The Medicine Mondiale "Life Raft" incubator is specifically designed for use extended use in the challenging developing world environment and is virtually maintenance free.
Commercial production is expected to commence in June 2008.
Cancer Treatment Nepal
The Problem | |
Less that 0.2% of women in Nepal are routinely screened for life threatening invasive cancers.
|
|
The Solution
Medicine Mondiale is working in collaboration with the Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital Nepal and the Nepal Cancer Relief Foundation to establish a centre of excellence to implement Nationwide curative and preventative cancer treatment programs.
This is a long term partnership to ensure that the people of Nepal have access to affordable, timely, high quality cancer services.
